CHAPTER THREE

My heart jumped when I saw him. I stood up and ran to him. I hugged him and wrapped my legs around him.

“Adrian! Where have you been? I’ve been so scared,” I said almost weeping in his arms.

“I am sorry. I had to leave for a while. I did not mean to frighten you.”

“I was only frightened you would not return.”

“You seemed more frightened than that, you must know that I would never hurt you.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Come with me. I must show you something,” he said.

He grabbed my hand and led me outside into the snow in the back of the castle. The moon was full and bright and it reflected off the snow lighting up the night. Adrian pulled me to him and pressed his lips against mine in a soft but aggressive way. I felt myself melting in his arms as his body radiated heat. I felt the familiar stirrings inside of me and I felt aroused instantly. I wanted him right then and there. Then he pulled away from me and said, “Wait there.”

Then he took a few steps away from me distancing himself.

“Adrian, don’t leave me alone!” I yelled after him.

“I am not, just wait there and watch me,” he said.

Then he stopped and faced me. He had a hard stern look on his face. Then like magic, he was encircled by a glowing green light of mist. When it evaporated there was a white bear in his place. The same bear I saw that day. I fell to my knees as my legs gave out under me. This was unbelievable. It was true. It was all true, the myths and legends surrounding this castle were true. The snow crunched under the heavy weight of the animal as it slowly came toward me. I was frightened and didn’t know if it was more animal or if Adrian was in there somewhere. Then it got close enough so that I could see its eyes, they were kind and soulful. It let out a little whimper and bowed its head to me. I petted the top of the head and scratched. Then it nudged its head against my cheek. I laughed in response. I could not believe that this was happening. Then it walked away and once again the green glow returned. Then Adrian emerged from it.

“Adrian! How? That is incredible!” I yelled.

“So you do not find it repulsive, that I am a creature?” he asked.

“Repulsive? No, never. I think it is magical. I am fascinated and in awe,” I said as I reached my hand up to his cheek.

He smiled. “I was worried. That day that you first saw me, the look in your eyes was complete fear. I hated myself for scaring you like that.”

“Well, yes but a bear had just burst out of the door I think fear is a natural reaction. It had nothing to do with you, because I did not know it was you,” I said.

He smiled and picked me up.
